A 5-step process to help you decide what to keep, sell or toss!

Have you been thinking Decluttering for quite some time?

When it comes to decluttering, do you feel completely stuck? Do you find it hard to know where to begin?

For some, just the thought of decluttering can be debilitating. It can up stir-up mixed emotions from the past, both good and bad. If tackled in the wrong manner, this exercise can cause a tremendous amount of stress.

The reason we have put together a simple 5-step decluttering process to ensure you feel supported and can maintain your wellbeing.

Whether you have a partner or you are on your own, you can do it! By taking things one day at a time, you will get there.

As you move along and begin to clear the way – you will start to feel happier and healthier.

I am sure you have managed many significant projects in your life, and this is just another. You may be surprised at how much you enjoy it.

The simple 5-step Decluttering Process

Step 1 Make the decision

This 5-step decluttering process is designed to help you prepare more easily if you are transitioning into a smaller space or simply free you up in your existing home. If you work methodically, you will begin making progress in no time. Let’s get started!

Step 1 – Make the decision

The first step is making your decision to downsize or simply declutter and not backing down.

The reason you have decided to ‘let go’ of certain things and declutter should always be at the front of your mind because when things get tough, you will need to be reminded why you started in the first place.

Tick the reasons below that resonate with you. The more boxes you tick, the sooner you should begin!

You have cupboards you have not opened for years.

You have rooms in your home you no longer go into.

You cannot manage or maintain your existing home.

You want to gift valuable items to your family.

You are feeling stuck and need to clear some space.

You often worry about how much stuff you have accumulated.

Step 2 – Set aside time

If you look around and feel overwhelmed, it is time to break the process down in chunks to make it easier to manage. If you can think of decluttering as your new part-time job, it will help you stay focused.

The benefits of doing your job well will be a healthier and happier you. You will feel a massive sense of accomplishment, especially if you have wanted to tackle this job for some time.

Your health and circumstances will determine how much time you can dedicate to decluttering each week. You may like to schedule your time from 10- 12 pm on a Monday – Wednesday – Friday as a set plan.

When you work out how many hours a week you need to allocate, you can then move through each drawer or cupboard, one room at a time. Make a list and tick it off as you go.

My tip here is to tackle the harder spaces when your energy is up! Give yourself a workable time-frame and do not be too hard on yourself.

Step 3 – Ask for Support

Decluttering is a very personal process, and it can bring up mixed emotions from the past. You may have even attempted to sort out your items before and ended up giving it away because it all seemed too hard. Now is the time to reach out to family and friends and ask if they will lend a hand on the days you have allocated your decluttering timetable. With a change of approach, you may even begin to enjoy it.

If you do not have loved ones close by or they are unable to help, you may like to hire a decluttering professional. Simply contact the agent who has shared this information for a recommended service provider.

They may be able to help you lift items that are too heavy and help you decide if you are going to gift, sell or toss your items. They can also help you unpack your things when it is time to move if you are downsizing.

Step 4 – Question the Value – How much do I love you?

After you have set the pretence and you are ready to dive deep, there is one question you may like to ask every time you pick up an item. The question is… How much do I love you? This simple question will help you decide whether or not you would like to keep, sell or toss the item.

In most cases, the most valuable items you own are not worth that much to you. Your grandson’s finger painting, for example, may be worth more to you than an antique worth thousands.

If you intend on downsizing, you will have to decide whether or not you love something enough to have it in your new, smaller space. You may need to cull some of your out-dated furniture.

When you have decided what you are not going to keep, you can offer it to family and friends, gift it to charity and as a last resort, toss it!

The best option is to recycle or reuse to help our environment and minimise adding to the landfill.

Step 5 – Be well Equipped

If you have all of the boxes and bags with coloured stickers and markers waiting for you, there should be no excuses. Often asking around, even contacting your local agent in this magazine for some recycled boxes is a great idea.

You can also use plastic tubs for more precious items like photos and books. These are available from Bunnings or the local $2 shop.

If you are Downsizing, make sure you use a code or colour for each room when packing boxes – For example, a K for the kitchen – a D for the dining room. This will make it easier when you unpack and relocate.

Here is a list of items you will need to begin:

  • Cardboard boxes
  • Sturdy big plastic bags for clothes ($2 shop)
  • Sealable Plastic tubs for precious items
  • Masking tape / Packing Tape
  • Newspaper / Bubble wrap – for protecting plates
  • Markers / Coloured Stickers
